A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT, LORNA COUTOULAS
January 27th – 30th I attended the CSA Sterilization Technical Committee meetings in Mississauga. These meetings are very educational. We discuss not only CSA standards but ISO and AAMI and have numerous experts from Canada and the US who use their knowledge to build our standards.
We started to review the warehousing document Z314.15 and the packaging, sterilization containers Z314.14 document. We then continued the review of packaging Z314.10.0 selection, use and care of surgical textiles and Z314.10.2 laundering of reusable surgical textiles.
BI’s and CI’s, chemical sterilization and washer disinfectors were also on the agenda.
We also discussed AAMI ST 79 Steam definitions on extended cycles.
I also attended the MEDEC meeting on the 30th.
We meet again in Halifax July 28th – 31st.
Other dates of conferences to look for this year are AAMI June 23-25th, CHICA June 2-5th and APEC June 15-18th.
We are continuing to work on education which is a huge job. The refresher course will now be called recertification and at our last executive meeting we agreed to accept certificates other than CSAO (from colleges) and allow those staff who are currently working in a medical device reprocessing area to recertify through the association. We are committed to the educational needs of all facilities throughout the province.
Our conference is coming up fast, September 15th and 16th. The title is ‘Reprocessing – The perpetual Puzzle’.
We are working hard to bring you some dynamic speakers and look forward to an exciting conference.
This is the nomination year for both the provincial and chapter executives. The open positions on the provincial executive will be sent to all members. Please visit the website to look at the duties for each position and consider joining us. It is a lot of work and a big commitment, though the knowledge and experience you will gain is worth every minute. Good luck to all of you who are nominated.
I think we are all looking forward to spring. It has been a long cold winter and I look forward to seeing you all at the conference in September. Don’t forget to block the dates in your calendar.

Great News!
CSAO and OTN have developed a partnership.
Membership Update
At the Annual Meeting in September 2007, the new amendment was passed to have the membership and fiscal year the same. The membership and fiscal year, for this year only, begins October 1st 2007 and will end May 31st 2008. The 2008-2009 year and years to follow will begin June 1st and will go until May 31st the following year.
